Oh Captain, My Captain

Happy March, everybody! Today, I would like to share a story with you all regarding my school, my teachers and my school bag. Yes, I want to talk about the school bag a 14-year-old carried around which weighed approximately 10 kilos and If I’m not wrong every student still continues to carry such dreadful weight to schools in India. None of the teachers care whether their students are carrying a heavy load of books on their shoulder because workbooks, textbooks, practical books and notebooks were always their main concern and nothing else mattered. And god-forbid you forget at home to shove a book inside the already cramped up school bag, you will suffer anxiety for the rest of the school day, until the teacher doesn’t notice the absence of the book with you or punishes you for not bringing it. The standard question will always follow, “Did you forget to pack your lunch today?” As children, they don’t say anything back, but when you think about, it’s a stupid question to ask. The lunch that the children brings to school has nothing to do with their inefficiency regarding bringing a book to the school.

If you were in a place like Kerala, where the monsoon season is famous for it’s heavy rains and frequent showers, carrying an umbrella was a sensible idea. But, I distinctly remember trying to avoid an umbrella, simply because I could carry all the required books instead. I remember sitting in the classroom early morning drenched in rain and shivering from head to toe, thanks to the fan that would be on high speed inside the room. Why? Why did I go to a place to get educated with the constant fear of being wrongfully accused. IF I had an environment where education was about learning new things daily without the need to be intimidated by my teachers, imagine how much fun education and school would have been?

I vividly remember a horrible time in my schooling days when I got my period while sitting in the classroom and my skirt had stained. The moment I found out, I panicked and decided to use the bathroom by asking the class rep, because the teacher hadn’t come yet for her class. While trying to get to the bathroom as soon as possible, a teacher came and stood in my way only to hit me in my butt asking me to get back to the class. While I tried explaining a fellow woman that I’ve gotten my period and I need to clean up, she dismissed me with another slap on my hands. I was just 12-years old. She would have been a 40-year-old. As I ran back to the classroom, I was stressed and worried about sitting down on my bench for the fear of blood showing up all over it. The embarrassment of having boys in my class seeing it made me cry in my seat the entire time. What kind of a vile human she has to be to punish a kid for wanting to go to the bathroom in an emergency?

I hated school for many reasons and not wanting to study was definitely not the reason. I loathed that place due to the large number of teachers who lacked empathy, emotion and the total disregard for their true purpose. I hated the whole system of education where public humiliation of students with the lowest score were a mandatory and the public appreciation of the students with the highest score were a compulsion. Anybody in between that were the least of their botheration. I remember a girl in my class always scoring the lowest marks and the teacher always made it a point to humiliate her by screaming her marks out loud for everyone to hear. Such unhealthy competition that they created within the students made the obnoxious ones glee and bully the rest and made the weaker ones frightened and timid. How does such method of teaching helps  the ones that need your attention and the ones that need to be properly guided? A teacher is supposed to teach them life values and knowing that every single child is different and the approach towards each of them.

I had a few favorite teachers in my school and it was never because they gave me any kind of special attention or I was their favorite. I was always an average student. But they were my favorite because they were able to inspire me to work harder and have fun while learning something new. They inspired me to be like them, a true guiding force with the right attitude and positive outlook towards children. Those are the kind of teachers, we need in our schools. Those are the teachers who need to be given the job. A teacher who can inspire an entire class to work as a team towards self-development, attaining knowledge and making the children understand the real meaning of failure and success. I don’t know how many such passionate teachers are there in our schools now, who are worth standing on top of your desk and saying “Oh captain, my captain” but if there are any, I would like to give them my heartfelt gratefulness and a standing ovation.
