Gumption, meaning courage, guts or the ability to decide what is the best thing to be done in a particular situation. No matter what we think about ourselves, there comes a point in our life, it can be for a week, a day, an hour or even 30 seconds where we reach our highest gumption point. We may not even realize at that very moment that we are being brave and sensible but we somehow do what we have to do. I was 6-years-old when I drew a painting of a regular mountain for a painting competition. Suddenly the wind blew and my painting turned upside down, only to look like a monk praying on a hill top. It looked much better than what I had actually intended to paint and therefore, I changed my name and class number from the original position to the upside down side. I received first prize for that competition.
I never would have imagined the socially awkward dud that I am would even try to pull of something like that, but I did. There was a friend of mine, quite similar to me, shy and reserved, but she saved me from two senior girls who were bullying me in the school bus for a seat. I think my friend had the gumption to put her feet down and understand it’s not something to be tolerated. We were constantly under their radar for the next few months, but it was totally worth it. When I grew up a little more, I had a neighbor friend with whom I used to play badminton. One day as we were playing, our shuttlecock fell on to someone’s house. As someone had to go and get it, she went ahead while I stood outside when a stray dog decided to run towards me. I was scared for my life and started running with the dog behind me. Just when I had reached a dead end and the dog was getting ready to pounce on me, I heard a whistle from the other side and the dog’s attention went towards it. It was my friend who whistled to get the dog to go towards her, as she stood still while the dog sniffed her for a good one minute before leaving. I clearly didn’t know how to handle a dog at that age but she told me that if you don’t move, they will leave you alone. She did that for me even when she was equally scared. That’s gumption! When you think about it, I had some solid people around me while growing up.
For a pushover like me it always felt great to have people standing up for me but you know what, it feels even better when you stand up for yourself. I don’t know if turning the painting upside down and getting a prize for it was even the gumption I’m talking about but that incident still feels like the first time I did something gutsy and badass for myself. When Kate Winslet slams the door at that guy who manipulated her for years in the movie, Holidays, she achieved some sort of gumption and that’s exactly we all need in our lives. To have the gumption to slam the door at people who manipulates us, bullies us and start fighting for the good while defining the meaning of true gumption to the people in our lives.
