Raining buns

Buns, the tutti fruity mixed sweet buns and I had a special bond during my childhood. The first time I tasted that little piece of carbohydrate was when I was in my primary school. The Principal of that school was a very strong and kind lady, we used to call her Ammuma(Grandmother) teacher even though I don’t think that is her real name. She had silver stands of hair with few tiny grey mustache and a black mole right on the side of her nose. If anybody was sick or not feeling well, they would be taken to her office  and we would either be sent home after calling the parents or would be asked to go back to class after taking some rest.

I, for once hated that god-forsaken place called school for innumerable reasons and when I heard about this little set-up they had, I decided to take the plunge and pretended to be extremely sick one day. As per their tradition I was escorted to the Principal’s room and she observed me prudently and asked the lady who sits on her side to bring me something. I was confused at that point and could feel that my plan is not working out, which led me to do some damage control and kept a nauseated face followed by eye twitching. Little later the lady came back with what appears to be a plate containing these.

I decided to take a bite of that sweet bread and while I chewed on it I saw the path to heaven. Sadly by now I had abandoned my little act and chewed on those dainty snack with such rigorous energy that eventually I was led back to my classroom. So I finally went home in the evening and told my mother about that funny looking bun and what a miraculous discovery it was, only to be looked upon with a pitifully glance which at that point I presumed to be adorable. She promised me that she would get some for me while coming back from work next day.

Days went by and by the time I was introduced and comfortably settled into the world of buns, there came another good news. There was going to be a sports day event for the primary kids and one of the games was going to be bun-eating competition!! I stood up in a flash of second, with my chin held high when the teacher asked for participants. So I assumed it is going to be an eating competition where you eat as many buns as you can. How difficult can it be? They won’t make it a difficult game for kids?? Or would they??

The competition was being held at a ground and what I saw as part of the preparation before the game was the deal breaker. They had a rope tied from one post to another post and on those ropes were the strings with buns on the end. So teachers would shake the rope and by default the strings will shake along with the buns, so we have to stand on our feet with hands behind the back and use only our mouth to take a bite from that moving bun. Whoever takes a chunk of bun first, wins. It was very humiliating to jump around trying to grab a piece, but I was highly motivated that I finished first and in return I got back the bun I had bitten in that round. My interest in the game reached another level once I knew we could actually have the bun that was bitten and let’s just say I was gorging on another two more buns while my parents collected my first prize medal and certificate. To this day I’m proud of it.
