My name is Lakshmi Geeth

Lakshmi Geeth! What a weird name, I mean it has the traditional South Indian name along with a more common North Indian name. So what is your last name? Whaaaaaat!! Geeth is your last name? So weird” said every single person who decided to dissect my name for the mere pleasure of passing time or plain curiosity. And I don’t even have a problem if you decide to split every single alphabet in my name and figure out the real reason why I have the name that I have. Because I’ve done the same a long time ago.

Extremely religious people are not going to like this post and I’m so sorry if I offended you in the process but I was never excited to say my name in a public platform. My confidence to speak in front of people would shatter a little bit more every time I had to say my name. Especially when you are the 6th Lakshmi in the entire crowd. It was so common from where I come from that if you see a group of girls standing and talking, just call out ‘Lakshmi’ and at least two of them will turn out to be a Lakshmi. And those of who reading without any idea what the word Lakshmi means, it’s actually the name of a Hindu Goddess of wealth, fortune and prosperity and she was married to another Hindu God named Vishnu. So having born in South India, not only was there 10 Lakshmi’ in my class, there would be 5 Vishnu’ who would be checking us Lakshmi’ from a corner. We were always linked forcefully and involuntarily with every Vishnu’ in the class that I slowly started staying away from them.

And adding Geeth as the last name had its perks and letdowns for a while. Everyone in south couldn’t understand the name’s true purpose. It was a name that was neither the part of tradition wherein you add the father’s name nor a family/caste name. My dad being the feminist that he is, decided to give me my mother’s name except her name is Geetha and they skipped the ‘a’ out of mine. But fortunately even though they left the ‘a’ alone, it kept haunting me for some while. I mean I was called Lakshmi Geetha, Geetha Lakshmi and Geeth Lakshmi because believe it or not, everyone was confused on what to call me. The name Lakshmi even gave birth to some weird nick names like Lachu, Lachi, Lakki and Laky which FYI is mostly a dog’s name.

Then one day, out of the blue, Goddess Lakshmi decided to answer my prayers and the Hindi movie, ‘Jab We Met’ came out. The movie was not as a hit as the character in it called “Geet” and everyone at that time around thought it would be nice to call me Geeth instead of Lakshmi and guess what, I loved it. I was nothing like the character Geeth who was chirpy, positive and annoyingly stupid. Well okay, maybe a little bit but I was never the happy and jumping around, loving life sort of girl at that point of time. So I started receiving unnecessary and unwanted comments like “You are nothing like the Geet from the movie” with a touch of disappointment in their faces. That was a nice time of my life.

Anyway somehow over the past 6 years some people and my people started calling me Geeth and sometimes very lovingly Geethu when they couldn’t resist their love for me 😀 Still everyone who meets me for the first time calls me Lakshmi and I’ve absolutely no problem with it but when we get close somehow it turns into a Geeth and I really feel happy when the transition happens. So you can call me Lakshmi or Geeth and I genuinely wouldn’t mind being called any of the two names but please, phleaaaase for the love of Goddess Lakshmi, don’t call me anything other than those. Pliss! 😛

Have a good day/night you beautiful peeps!

I’m an ordinarily odd person who is pleasant to talk to. When I’m not trying to be funny, I would be lying on the floor bawling my eyes out. I write weird stories, real life snippets, traumatic and dramatic memories along with doses of unsolicited advices. 🙂
