Keeping up with Kunju

From the title of the post you may judge me for a person who watches crappy reality shows, but yes, I sometimes do indulge in watching them for the mere pleasure of entertainment. Coming to the topic of discussion here, my brother! If you have been a reader of this blog for sometime, you would know that I occasionally talk about my elder brother here and there. In fact I write about him on almost all of my childhood stories but somehow never have I written a post completely about him. The truth is I cannot cover everything about him in a single post and the stories are such that I will need to elaborate and explaine it in detail. So I’ll introduce him and his Kashmiri beauty in this post as of now.  So my brother’s name is Nidhin a.k.a kunju as we lovingly call him. Kunju was the first born in my maternal side of the family and hence a favorite to so many of them. While my parents unleashed the notorious devil into this world 3 and half years before me, I, however, came as quite a bit of a surprise to everyone around me who might have expected something similar to him. You see, I was everything opposite to him, a dull dud and Kunju on the other hand was the center of attention in a crowd with a huge fan following everywhere he goes.  He was the main dancer for almost every talent show in our residence association and school. I still remember him dancing to the Backstreet Boys song “Everybody” and everyone in the crowd were howling and cheering him up. And he was a favorite part of the family gatherings too, when he would start mimicking actors and people we knew so flawlessly. Whatever he did, he brought his own style into it and that’s what makes him even more special.

Through out my childhood I lived under my brother’s shadow but I have no complains because I liked being invisible. But that came with a small price to pay as well. While I was in the same school as his, I was always tracked down by random girls, juniors, seniors and even his classmates as ‘Nidhin’s sister’ and the sheer amount of excitement they had achieved to have finally found ‘Nidhin’s sister’ is way beyond me. Sometimes I was showered with birthday chocolates from them, sometimes chocolates just so that I would tell him something after going home, sometimes they just looked at me giggling, pointing and left saying “That’s Nidhin’s sister”. I mean what does that even mean?

Even though I never liked him for the first 4 to 5 years of the starting of my life, due to reasons all of you are well familiar with.  We became pretty close after those ‘You-were-adopted-from-the-street’ phase without even knowing it. Of course we had our share of fights over the T.V remote, making fun of each other, playing together and even having each other’s back.  When we grew up even further,  he also started confiding in me many of his secrets. I was never appreciative of the fact that he shared his secrets with me, but now when I think about it, he always had the confidence in me to tell me everything that’s been happening with him and that’s exactly what he did when he started going out with Nandini a.k.a Nandu whom he had met while doing his MBA. I remember vividly that he had sent me 3 pictures of her along with a mail telling me everything about it. I was so happy for him and I never told anybody about his secret till he waited and decided to tell my parents when he started working. My parents always knew this was going to happen and Nandu being a beautiful, intelligent girl with a wonderful family, there was nothing for us to worry either.

I rememeber going for their wedding in Bhopal all the way from Pune for a single day because I couldn’t afford to take leave from college. The wedding was a beautiful ceremony which took place from late night till early morning even though I dozing off sitting through the ceremony from time to time. They have been married for more than 4 years and their love story is something that would put your faith right back in the whole concept of true love. Maybe I’ll write about how they met and how they fell in love in another post. And one of the most beautiful thing that came out of a marriage of such sorts is my niece, Avantika who is our lil angel.
