THE MAGIC ELEVATOR

Jim is a very sad boy. There are occasional happy moments in his life where you can see a genuine smile forming and suddenly being extinguished by a thought, and there are times when his mother would ask him to smile and a fake one would be plastered to make her happy. He was a sad boy from childhood but also a kind one. His mother would force him to join drama classes and gym classes and he was never interested in any of it. All he ever loved to do was watch the sky and see the clouds forming images. He hardly had any friends and he was bullied and made fun at school for being the “weird” one. When teachers would ask him to speak up in the class, he would sweat and panic. He was a skinny small boy that nobody wanted to get to know. Time went past and he grew up.

When Jim turned 29 nothing changed in him and nobody changed around him. He remained sad and the world went by him. He slept every night thinking, “This is it?”

That one night the stars twinkled at him.

As usual Jim was crossing the road to reach his office one day when he noticed a lady who was struggling to hold on to a heap of books which she was carrying. Being the man he is he went to help her and gladly held on to half of the books from her.

“Where do u need to be madam?” he asked

“I teach at this public school two blocks away, if its a trouble for you I can carry it myself..”

“Not a problem, ill come with you” he confirmed.

They both walked in silence and he was struggling to see the path from all the books in front of him. Once they reached the school premise the young lady helped him unload the books and gave him a thank you and rushed back in. He looked at his watch and he was 20 minutes late to office. Jim was sure his boss is not going to be happy about it and he hurried to get to the office.

“Oh there he is. Finally you have decided to join us” exclaimed the boss.

“I’m so sorry. I am late”
“This is not the first time you have done this Mr.Perula and I do not need such undisciplined team players in here”
“I was never late sir, but..”
“I think i need to let you go Mr.Perula” concluded the boss.
“Can you please give me one more chance Mr.Ruffert?” begged Jim
“I am afraid not, You may leave.”

While walking back from the building he couldn’t notice but seeing the same lady whom he helped, walking past the same street carrying the same load of books in haste.
He reached up to her into a building where she went inside an elevator and disappeared. He pressed the button and waited patiently for the elevator to come down. When the elevator came back he did not find the lady in there but he decided to go in anyway and pressed number 16, the only floor button in the elevator. As soon as the door closed he found himself being choked and light-headed. He started doubting whether he had actually seen the same lady and what he is going to conclude from it, if its the same person. Before he could address all that, the door opened and he was perplexed to see that the whole building has changed.
He is now surrounded with what appears to be gigantic shelves reaching up to the sky and ladders running around the whole place. He is frozen and before he could run away from this imagination, he was tapped on the shoulder by the same lady he helped some time back.
“Lost, are you my child?” Asked the young lady
“I was..i thought i helped you and..I am sorry.” he said
“Come with me and lets find your book.” she said
“I am confused, what book and what is this place?” he exclaimed
“This is the house of the sad. Every humans with the saddest life history has a book here on his name. The book will show the core emotion of you other than sadness and we try to get them to the other side.”
He was dumbstruck. He was out of words and couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
She smiled at him and continued walking towards one shelf. He followed her silently and found her talking to another lady who is dressed in the same dress.
When she turned she had a book with her and she came smiling to me and handed me the book.
“So what we know of you is the truth. You are the kind one.” she smiled.
“What is this about?” he finally asked.
“This book represents you as a person Jim, like all these books representing many sad people out here. If you peel away from your sadness what kind of a person you are can be defined from these book.”
“So i am the kind one?”
“You can be.”
“what do you mean?”
“Because of your sadness, it has affected many people who has walked past your life. When i walked past you, i was in obvious need of kindness, it was out there. But you are blinded by your sadness that the simple act of being kind to yourself has not crossed your mind. If you have been kind to yourself, you can see that you can make many people around you happy and kind to each other.”
“You don’t know what are the things I have..”
“I know everything. I made that book about you. All these books represent who we are from within. We can truly appreciate who we are and what we are, if we would let go of sadness with your true emotion, in your case, Kindness.”
“Now all I want you to do is take this book and leave this building. And maybe I will never see you again.” she smiled and waved at him to leave.
He got inside the elevator, disturbed and highly confused. The moment the door opened he could not believe his eyes. He was in his school and he is being asked a question. ‘choose kindness over sadness.’, it kept running in his mind. All of a sudden he spoke confidently in the class. His friends were looking out for him, just as he would for them. He made sure his mother was always happy and made it a point to make her laugh. Jim was a kind boy.
