Regrets and a Pizza

Frank Claudius is living on the second floor of an apartment building in the bustling city, Chicago. Frank and his family migrated to the United States when he was two years old and even after spending ninety years of his life in the United States, he still does not feel at home. Frank cannot go back to his country since everyone he knew from childhood do not live there anymore. Now that he has no one or nowhere to go to, he pretty much spends his entire day in this apartment.

I am feeling famished and I am too lazy to cook. I think I will order a pizza for lunch today also, maybe I won’t have extra-cheese. How much I miss my mama and her food, If only I had spent some more time with her when she was alive. She brought me up sacrificing many opportunities she could have had and when it was time for me to take care of her, I forgot to do many things.

“Hi there, My name is Frank Claudius and my number is 147389244. Yes, yes you do have my address and I need to order a hawaiian pizza with extra pineapple and cheese, Thank you.”

How much my wife loved Pineapples, it was her favorite. I wish I had appreciated her more when she was around. She was always relatable to my mother, caring, kind and always thinking about my best interest. Even thought she would fight with me like a two-year old, I shouldn’t have taken those fights seriously and let it go. How I wish I had resolved those fights immediately rather than spending weeks without talking to her because of my ego. How I wish I could have had it all back. Let me watch some television now.

Frank switches on the television and keeps his current favorite singing talent show.

My son had a flair for singing and I still remember how gravely he wanted to take his path towards singing. Alas, given a choice I would have given him the confidence and support to go after his passion. But I feared for his future and security that I forced him into the corporate world. He was never happy,  I could see it in his eyes and now God took him too away from me, leaving me all alone in this world.

The T.V screen shutters for a second and it goes blank.

Great! The T.V projector is shutting down again, l should call the technician today itself. If papa was alive he would have fixed it by now. He was a jolly good man and used to fix all our electronic items with such competency. That man taught me everything I needed to learn in my life and in his last breath I was not there for him. I really did muck up my life and never even took proper care of my parents, wife and son. That is the exact reason I am going to die a lonely death.

There is a knock on the front door and he slowly gets up with the support of his walking stick and drags his feet towards the door.

Near the entrance of the door lies an old rusted big armchair and there are four transparent, almost white figures sitting on it, while Frank opened the door.

“Did he order pizza again?” asked the mother moaning.
“Yes he has and did you hear what he was thinking” asked the father.
“I should have taught him how to cook when he was a kid itself, I did not teach him how to survive on his own. I wish I had taken care of that.” finished the mother.
“Yes, and I for once, instead of forcing him to learn about those electronics and everything else about life, I should have given him advice on seizing the day and not to sit in his apartment all day long and sulk about people who are dead” screamed the father.
“He is missing us Arnold, my poor baby. Moreover our grandson came before him. God has been unfair on us.” mother sighed.
“Oh grandma, don’t be upset, I had a good life when I died at 60 , My family including papa himself is well-settled now because he pushed me into things. I am grateful for that, but I wish I had told him earlier on itself.” finished the son.

In the corner was the wife as transparent as the rest of them with a face so disappointed at the moment, even the sobbing mother-in-law couldn’t help but notice.
“You do miss my son, don’t you?” she asked.
“Oh yes Darla, everyday.” she replied her lips trembling.
“We all have our regrets, whether dead or alive, what else can I say darling.” comforted the mother.
“It’s not that.” the wife had transparent sparkling tears now rolling down her cheeks. The three of the ghostly figures were now concerned for her.
“Then what is the matter?” the father asked.
“I have always told Frank one thing, just one thing to make sure he ordered thin crust hawaiian pizza and he never listened to me. See, now how he is eating that barbaric thick crust pizza.” wife wailed.

Frank stopped for a second to look around about that strange whimper and continued to eat his pizza.
