Fair warning: People who do not like my imaginary friend will not like this story, so kindly excuse.
“Why do bad things happen to good people, why God, WHYYYY???” I wailed.
“So, did you miss me?”
I haven’t heard that voice in a very long time, even thought it had changed from an innocent feeble one to somewhat husky. But when I saw him after two years, so many emotions were piling up on me that it was hard to process. I had everything going smooth these past two years with new friends and I was also getting comfortable with my school, it almost felt good to go back everyday. Almost. That is the exact reason I was so adamant not to talk to Akash ever again. Okay that’s a lie. My ego was not letting me talk to this asshole who, after being friends with me for 4 years decided to stop understanding my situation and left me with nothing but the realities of life. To be honest, I missed him around and the number of stories we used to make up and the silly fights we used to have were some of the best memories I had with him. This amazing friendship was ruined by his huge expectations and demands for importance and spotlight, it’s like he wanted me to go around telling people he was my best friend. I might as well write I’m a loser who has an imaginary friend on my forehead and go running around the place.
I was going through a serious meltdown during my initial days in 11th grade when everything around me had changed drastically. I know I’m highly dramatizing the entire situation, but I hated any changes that happened in life and freaked out over every single thing that is going different which by then included my school, my home, the place where I live and everything else. So seeing him after all that, I could not but feel a sense of joy and relief of familiarity that I never expected our conversation to turn into one of the creepiest to date:
“Hey Akash, I haven’t seen you in a really long time.” I said, not able to control the shrillness in my voice.
“Meet my friend, Shikha, she’s beautiful, smart and extremely funny and I met her in my school.” Akash couldn’t control the glee.
“Hi Lakshmi, Akash told me so much about you, you were not nice to him.” She said.
“Okay. Wow. Okay. I think you should not believe everything your newly found imaginary friend tells you, Shikha. Haven’t your parents taught you anything?” I sassed the best I could.
“I don’t have parents.” She replied.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, I was rude. I’m going through too many things at the moment actually. It’s really stressful for me.” I confessed to her.
“That is okay, I think you’re not so bad, I judged you way too quickly too. I like your name.” She said.
“Oh you do? I hate the fact that it is such a common name. You can call me Geeth if you want, that’s my last name.” I said.
“Woah, woah, woah!!! Hold on and rewind please. She can’t call you anything because she is MY friend and NOT yours. She is everything that you are not and that is exactly why I like her. You stay away from Shikha.” Said Akash, fuming.
“Oh somebody is possessive.” I said.
“He is, isn’t he???” Shikha sounding surprised.
“Well, he was EXACTLY the same with me about 2 years ago. Hmmm.. Good luck.” I said.

Also, you can save your little speech about how we stopped talking, I’ve told her everything that has happened.” He finished.
“Let’s understand something here Akash, I don’t need to prove to you or her about everything. If you are trying to create an aura of discomfort for all of us, it’s better you leave.” I said.
“We were inseparable for years, so once you get new friends you forget your old ones?” Akash asked.
“I never forgot you. You had so many insecurities that I couldn’t deal with it on a day-to-day basis. You needed instant gratification which I was not ready for.”
“Oh I completely understand what you are trying to say.” Exclaimed Shikha.
“WHAT???” Yelled Akash.
“You understand? Do you think I have insecurities???” Akash questioned Shikha.
“Well, you’re a little bit, umm extreme.” Finished Shikha.
“You were right Akash, she is smart, funny and beautiful.” I said.
“Oh that is so sweet. Let us hang out more often?” Shikha said.
Akash was uncontrollably angry now that his entire face could’ve been used to paint the wall red. He started looking around my room to find something to destroy and his eyes immediately met with my new school textbooks lying on the table.
“HEY!!! Don’t even think about it.” I screamed.
“What’s going on here??” Asked my brother, who just peeped into my room all of a sudden.
“Oh I think I saw a cockroach now.” I replied immediately.
“Where is it??” He asked.
I looked around the entire room, both of them were nowhere to be seen.
“I think I lost it.” I finished.
